The final of the three head-to-heads saw X-Factor runner-up Andy Abraham (left) lose out to actress and singer Michelle Gayle (right) - but Andy was reprieved by Terry Wogan as his wildcard choice

2008's line-up saw the usual line-up of failed talent show contestants and has-been pop stars, along with an actual proper pop group. A revamped format saw the first part of the contest divided into three head-to-head battles (see images above). Judges John Barrowman and Carrie Grant had to select one winner from each pairing, with Terry Wogan - following his attempt to 'adjust' the result of 2007's contest - being given the casting vote if necessary, as well as the opportunity to 'save' one of the three unlucky contestants.

Following this process, which saw LoveShy and Rob McVeigh eliminated, the four remaining entrants were put to the public vote, and then, as last year, the two songs with the highest vote were performed again in a 'sing-off' - the result of which saw Michelle Gayle defeated by none other than Wogan's Wildcard, Andy Abraham.

But we'll have to wait until 24th May to find out whether Andy has what it takes to beat a singing turkey...

Making Your Mind Up 2007

A slightly later Making Your Mind Up for 2007, airing on 17th March at 7.30pm, hosted by Terry Wogan and Fearne Cotton.

2007's line-up had a somewhat 'has-been' feel about it, with former singers from East 17, The Darkness and Atomic Kitten all taking part, along with one-time chart stars Big Brovaz and Scooch.

The regional vote was ditched , and instead the four songs with the fewest votes were eliminated, leaving a 'sing-off' between the remaining two competitiors. This left a straight choice between French singer Cyndi Almouzni's classy, classic Eurovision ballad, which would have seen the UK finish in the top half of the Eurovision scoreboard for a change - and Scooch's cheesy, camp pop song which would no doubt have us languishing at the bottom as usual.

And for a precious few seconds it appeared that The Great British Public had, for once, actually made the correct choice...until it transpired that Terry Wogan had announced the wrong winner.

So just how low did Scooch go? See the results on our Eurovision 2007 pages.

Making Your Mind Up 2006

2006's Making Your Mind Up aired on BBC1 on 4th March at 6.20pm, presented by Terry Wogan and Natasha Kaplinsky. As in previous years, the results were revealed on a regional basis; votes cast by mobile phones and text messaging, and visitors to the BBC website were announced separately.

The line-up included Antony Costa, formerly of boy band Blue, one-time Hear'Say member Kym Marsh, and City Chix, two members of the cast of BBC Scotland's soap River City. However none of them were able to see off the challenge posed by rap artist Daz Sampson who went on to represent the UK at Eurovision 2006...

Making Your Mind Up 2005

2005's Eurovision selection took place on BBC1 on Saturday 5th March from 5.45pm, presented by Terry Wogan and Natasha Kaplinsky.

Making Your Mind Up 2004

Following the disastrous outcome for the UK's entry in the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest, 2004's selection process was a much higher profile event than in previous years. Moving to a prime Saturday night slot, 6.35pm on 28th February, the show was jazzed up and renamed Making Your Mind Up. The presenters were Terry Wogan and Gaby Roslin.

The results were announced as below. Votes cast by text messaging and interactive digital television were announced separately.

A Song for Europe 2003

2003's A Song for Europe kept the same formula as in previous years and was again undertaken with as little publicity or fanfare as possible. First of all, listeners to Terry Wogan and Ken Bruce on Radio 2 whittled the eight finalists down to four (the eliminated entries were Do Anything for Your Love by Fenix, First Night by Steamy Knights, Smile by Gallico and Rain Day in Summer by Ben Plus One).

Then a live contest, hosted by Terry, was held on Sunday 2nd March at 4.35pm (hardly peak viewing time!), inviting viewers to vote for their favourite song. This year, though, there were one change which harked back to an earlier era - for the first time since 1987, the results were unveiled on a regional basis - the results table can be seen below.

Jemini were the winners of the 2003 contest, although it was hardly a convincing win - it is widely believed that Emily Reed had in fact received the most votes. But thanks to the regional scoring system it was to be Jemini who would travel to Riga in Latvia to represent the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest 2003 - but how could it go so wrong?
