In 1992 the old idea of having one artist perform all the songs was revived for A Song for Europe. This proved successful for the first two years but 1994 saw a poor result, so the show was revamped again in 1995, with Jonathan King at the helm. He described A Song for Europe as having become "an appalling debacle, the ultimate wasted opportunity". The result was a much poppier, more contemporary show than ever before. In 1996 four songs were eliminated in a semi-final shown in a Top of the Pops special. From 1997 it was listeners to Ken Bruce's show on Radio 2 who decided which four songs out of eight would go through to the televised final. But by this time the BBC appeared to be losing interest fast, with the programme finding itself relegated to a Sunday afternoon graveyard slot. |
