The idents Other presentation
The infamous ballet dancers... This static ident was seen for the first time on 30th March 2002 and was used to link into coverage of the death of HM The Queen Mother. Must have confused an awful lot of viewers who had not seen this ident before... Watch a clip
On the left, a very well designed menu from the end of a trailer, shown earlier that day. This schedule did not go ahead as planned, and was replaced by the one shown on the right, shown here on a new-style static menu. Note the highly inappropriate background in the circumstances.
This static, blurred version of Capoeira was used to introduce BBC news bulletins for the next few days. A clock was produced for the new look, but it was never been seen on air. It was based on this blurred Capoeira background with the familiar white BBC clockface.
Slides and menus took on a unique style for BBC1, rather than forming part of an identical generic look across the channels. Like the new idents, the design was visibly inferior to the previous look.
Trailers - compare the old and the new.
More trailers.
Programme slides from 2002 and 2003 - animated for the first time. However since the new look was introduced, slides have become very much an endangered species. Much use was made of the ugly transparent white strips (that's not a rock band by the way) on the new-style trailers, captions and menus.
BBC1's presentation was modified on 1st May 2004. Unfortunately the dancer idents remained, but the trailer endboards, menus and so on were changed to this supposedly 'fresher' design. Hmmm...it's a bit red, isn't it?
Another trailer with the garish red shutters, promoting the return of Doctor Who in March 2005.
On Saturday 25th September 2004 BBC presentation started making an unwelcome intrusion into the programmes when BBC1 and BBC2 began trialling large, distracting, animating 'programme pointers' (above) informing us what's coming up next. Apparently having the announcer telling us what's coming up next over the credits isn't enough these days. Although the weight of viewer complaints following this two week trial forced them off screen for a while, unfortunately they eventually crept back again.
Technical problems? A still menu (left) was shown on BBC1 at 8.00pm on Monday 24th January 2005 detailing the night's programmes, including some that had already been on. The following ident (right) was also static, with no music.
Programme slides have almost vanished completely now, but occasionally one does need to be pressed into service, such as this slide into a news report, which was seen at 7.45pm on Saturday 26th March 2005. On the right, a slide for Panorama seen on 4th February 2006; like this example, slides now usually include the day and time.
Slides are now more commonly seen during the overnight Sign Zone.
Used since 2005, brief trailers which use 'The ONE to Watch' theme, and use a transparent red background for the end caption instead of a solid one. Incidentally, 'THE ONE' logo is identical to a billboard campaign from March 2002, coinciding with the launch of the dancer idents.

BBC1 idents as seen in the nations. Note that, for no apparent reason, the Welsh version of Capoeira starts at an earlier point in the action, with the London Eye in shot, which is not seen in the network version.
Two idents specifically for BBC1 Wales. These were introduced on St David's Day, 1st March 2005.

It didn't take long for the new BBC1 idents to be spoofed - in April 2002 digital channel E4 began using their own versions of Ballet and Acrobats (above), as well as Capoeira (not shown).
Courtesy of Dead Ringers in July 2003, Tony Blair (Jon Culshaw) tries his hand at performing for a BBC1 ident.
Peter Kay takes part in this spoof version of Hip Hop, variations of which were used to introduce Comic Relief Night in both 2003 and 2005. Watch a clip Other spoofs have come courtesy of French and Saunders on their Christmas Day 2002 special. The idents Other presentation |
