The idents Other presentation BBC 2W

"Look your last now, because the face of BBC2 is changing forever as of tomorrow morning..."

As the announcer spoke those words, the original version of the big 2 went out where it came in - with Paint (watch the final showing here ) - and reappeared the next morning in a completely different form...

At 7.00am on 19th November 2001, BBC2 received its first all-new idents for over ten years. The famous '2' lived on, but was now imbued with a 'personality'. There were just four rather samey idents to begin with; more variants were introduced in subsequent years, but all employed the same white '2' which, in many cases, grew robotic arms to carry out its various tasks. There were two versions of each ident - the full version, and a shorter one which started further into the animation.

Note the URL which appeared in the top left of each ident - strangely, BBC2 was now the only BBC channel to do this. In May 2002 the web address was amended slightly (below) to direct viewers straight to the new BBC2 website; it was also moved down slightly, rather ominously leaving just enough space to squeeze in a DOG... But by 2005 it had disappeared altogether.

Hold on a minute - something seems to be missing here...Where's the housekeeping '2' when you need him?

The idents Other presentation BBC 2W

Though not attracting the same levels of derision that BBC1's dancers did over the years, there was still a feeling that these idents, produced by Lambie-Nairn, were simply not as good as those that carried the channel through the 1990s. The unrelenting yellow colour scheme theme quickly began to feel tired, and in particular the jokey idents such as 'Domino' and 'Sticky Label' became tedious on repeated viewings. There was also criticism that the idents were not suitable to link into serious programming - this was partially addressed by the introduction of a third version of 'Bounce', with a more downbeat soundtrack.

In the end, these 2s were to last approximately half as long as their predecessors - in February 2007, it was all change for the 2 once again...
