The idents Other presentation BBC 2W
This static, silent version of Bounce was used either when the playout server breaks down, or when any of the regular ident set is deemed too frivolous for the subject matter of the programme following. Frankly, I think this is far better than any of the moving idents! Slides and trailers took on a new look as part of the 2001 revamp. Compare and contrast the old and the new:
Above: trailers.
Above: programme slides.
More programme slides. Spotting one of these was now like seeing a skylark...
More trailers. From around 2005, the standard type of trailer (top row) co-existed with shorter, 'coming up' trailers voiced by the live announcer (bottom row).
Left: an example of the menus used during peak time around 2001/02. Right: a less frequently seen static menu, used in the case of schedule changes. Note how this example, seen in March 2002, takes no account of the 4:3 'safe' area - or the 14:9 one for that matter!
A later style of menu, first seen on BBC2 in 2006.
Viewers to the digital version of BBC2 Northern Ireland- known as BBC2 NI, which fits in the box better - have been able to enjoy two additional idents of their own (above) since 4th February 2002. They include the most hideous BBC2 ident ever, where the 2 is seen having breakfast. What have viewers in Northern Ireland done to deserve this? Welsh digital viewers also have their own version of BBC2 - see the next page for details of BBC 2W.
BBC2 at 40
Above: to mark the channel's 40th birthday in April 2004, the big '2' became probably the first television symbol ever to star on the cover of 'Radio Times'!
Meanwhile on-screen, a special version of 'Invisible Walls' cleverly combined the old and the new for the anniversary. Watch a clip
Goodbye to yellow?
Left: a special Winter Olympics ident introduced in February 2006 and used in all junctions for the duration of the games. Hang on a minute...haven't we seen it somewhere before? Yes, it's none other than the Christmas 2000 ident, from the era of the previous 2s, hence the complete lack of yellow! Watch a clip Right: another pre-2001 ident was brought out of the attic from May 2006 - 'Predator' reappeared to provide a perhaps slightly tenuous introduction into coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show. Watch a clip Both of these idents remained in regular use until BBC2's next revamp in February 2007.
More 2s that don't fit the 'corporate' style, new ones this time, used to introduce the series Home in August 2006.
Left: one in a series of doggy comedy idents from 2005 and 2006, used with the tagline 'Pedigree Comedy'. Right: the doggy 2 as seen at the end of trailers for comedy programmes.
The BBC2 website, meanwhile, abandoned the yellow theme altogether in early 2006, and now employed these flapping 2s, which do seem somewhat nicer than what we normally have on screen. The idents Other presentation BBC 2W |
