BBC 2W

Launched on 5th November 2001, BBC 2W is an evening service which takes over the digital version of BBC2 Wales; viewers right across the UK are able to see it on digital satellite. However it means that network BBC2 programmes from approx 8.30-10.30 are only available on analogue to Welsh viewers who don't have satellite television.

As if to try to distance itself from the main BBC2 2W has a totally individual presentation style. First of all, BBC2 hands over to 2W (above).

The 2W ident used at launch (left), which linked seamlessly into a now/next menu (right).

Trailers used a very un-BBC style endboard (above) - and no sign of the Gill Sans font anywhere!

It wasn't long, however, before the bright green idents were deemed too lurid for viewers' eyes, and were replaced by a series of idents in which the BBC 2W green box is revealed to be part of the action:

Look, even Ivor the Engine puts in an appearance! The series itself also enjoys an outing on 2W.

Left: the current trailer style, more in step with that used on the national BBC2. Right: BBC 2W had one of shortest lived DOGs in television history, which was removed just one week after launch in November 2001 due to viewer complaints. And yet, in June 2004, guess what? It came back!

As pat of the BBC cutbacks announced in October 2007, it was confirmed that BBC 2W will close in the run-up to digital switchover in Wales in 2009.
