2002

The BBC's Christmas idents for 2002 first appeared on Saturday 21st December, and after a year of dreadful dancer idents, BBC1 rounded off the year with...children dressed as snowflakes. Cringeworthy or what? Meanwhile over on BBC2, the initial indication was that things seemed, well, kind of familiar - but thankfully the repeat of 2001's ident was soon joined by a brand new version. But it's still yellow...

And for the first time BBC Choice and BBC4 made some attempt at getting into the festive spirit - so we had some Christmas lights on BBC Choice's building site, and sleigh bells on the usual BBC4 idents.

2003

For 2003, the Scrooges at the BBC failed to give us a new BBC1 Christmas ident. That means those pesky kids in snowflake costumes were given the chance to run round our screens for the second consecutive year.

BBC2, on other hand, did manage to contribute a new - if not especially Christmassy - ident, which sees the 2 trapped in a block of ice, spinning round the screen. It was first seen on the evening of Saturday 20th December - earlier than ever! The 2001 Christmas tree and 2002 snow 2 also made a comeback.

BBC3 also had a festive ident, although this appeared to be in addition to, rather than in place of, the usual ident set.

2004

2004's BBC1 ident was the result of a 'Blue Peter' competition. The completed ident was revealed on the programme on Friday 17th December - it made its 'proper' debut the following evening at 5.45pm. Don't you get the feeling Christmas is starting earlier and earlier each year?! Watch a clip

The winner was ten year-old Charlotte Strethill-Smith; however the BBC's interpretation of her original design (above) is clearly reminiscent of the snowflake kids.

Above: in addition to the main ident there were also four between-trailer 'animations'.

Sadly there was nothing new at all from BBC2 - instead the three previous Christmas idents were brought out of the attic once again.

BBC3 on the other hand managed to outdo its bigger brothers with several new Christmas idents for 2004.
